Painted Basket

In 1931, colonial Japanese archaeologists discovered the famous Painted Basket in a tomb now named after the treasure in Pyongyang, North Korea. It was probably made in Shu (now Szechwan) in western China during the 1st or 2nd century. Over 90 figures, often referred to as the Paragons of Filial Piety by scholars are painted on the relic in lacquer and are identified by name. The paragons were legendary people famed for their piousness.
