Today’s national treasure, however, is not the pagodas themselves but what was discovered in one of the pagodas. In September of 1966, grave robbers attempted to steal the contents of the Seokga Pagoda. Their efforts were thwarted and an official excavation began the next month. Amazingly, relics interred when the pagoda was first built over 1200 years before remained intact for the archaeologists to discover in 1966. These items were subsequently designated as a group as National Treasure No. 126.
