Are all Korean men required to serve in the army?

Ever since the Korean War, young men in their 20s have been required to serve in the Republic of Korea Armed Forces ─ encompassing Korea's Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force.

Military service comes as a response to the mountainous terrain of the Korean Peninsula (70 percent mountainous) and to the one-million strong North Korean army, two thirds of which is permanently garrisoned in the frontline near the DMZ. The Republic of Korea Armed Forces constitute one of the largest standing armed forces in the world, with a reported personnel strength of 3,695,000 in 2008.
