Calligraphy

Closely related to the art of painting is calligraphy. As Koreans have used Chinese characters since the second or third century of the common era, calligraphy was naturally considered another form of important art.

A work of calligraphy would be hung on a wall to be admired just like a painting; the vitality, rhythm and economy of strokes were seen as the essence of good calligraphy. The art was regarded as a necessary process of mental discipline for cultured gentlemen.
