Korea's international relations have grown significantly since the founding of the Republic of Korea in 1948, particularly since the nation began to pursue a policy of export-driven economic development and international commerce. By actively participating in international organizations including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and building cooperative relations with Third-World nations, Korea has both fortified its ties with traditional allies and forged new relations.
