It is the fresh and fragrant early summer. The first full moon of the luner year, Jeongwol Daeboreum, or the day we ”sell” our heat, has now passed by, and the aroma of forsythias and azaleas has gone. What would be a good way to help us bear the muggy weather as we stand on the threshold of summer? In the royal court of the Joseon Dynasty, the doctors responsible for treating the king used to prepare a representative traditional drink called jehotang. This beverage helps to beat the sweltering heat and was traditionally served to the king on Dano, May 5 in the lunar calendar, the day when summer starts.
