For a very long time, tteok (rice cakes) was an essential part of any special event and was always prepared for weddings, a baby’s 100-day anniversary, etc. Tteok was also eaten to chase away bad luck or to tell fortunes. Our Korean ancestors ate soup made with tteok to celebrate the new year. Tteok has a special significance as something more than just a festive food.
