Korea has rigid laws regarding firearms ownership and maintains a very strict stance when it comes to licensing of and authorization for all activities related to small arms and light weapons. Firearms are generally divided into two categories: military and non-military use. Guns are generally only used and carried by military personnel and police, although police officers more commonly use alternative weapons such as batons rather than their firearms.
