Like many countries in the world, Korea has been gearing up its efforts toward environmental preservation. As cases in point, Korea is a member of the Antarctic-Environmental Protocol, the Biodiversity Treaty, the Kyoto Protocol and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, among several other environmental efforts. Arguably, however, Korea's most important environmental project may be its Green New Deal, in which the nation has pledged to invest KRW107 trillion (USD 84 billion) over the five years following 2009 in improving energy efficiency to help cut reliance on fossil fuels and boost economic growth.
