
Confucian traditions have deep roots in Korea, a country that has long been a male-dominated society. However, the social status of women has experienced significant improvement over recent decades. In 1990, the Ministry of Political Affairs announced its decision to address socio-cultural issues with a special focus on women. In 1996, the ministry put officials in charge of women's issues following the enactment of the"Women's Development Act." In 1998, the Presidential Commission on Women's Affairs was established to plan and compile policies governing women's issues. One year later, the Act for Gender Discrimination Prevention and Relief was established.
