100 Years of Korean Comics Celebrated at Home and Abroad

Manhwa, referring to original comic books from Korea, is now as much a recognized name as that of Japanese manga among avid fans of cartoons and comics around the world. This year, commemorating the 100th anniversary of manhwa, the NationalMuseum of Contemporary has just opened the biggest manhwa exhibition ever, titled “100 Years of Korean Comics” (June 3 to Aug. 23.)

But are Korean comics truly that old? Yes they are. It was June 2, 1909 when Korea's first cartoonist Lee Do-young published his political cartoon – the first manhwa – in Daehan Minbo Newspaper.
