Fairy tales tell lessons behind Parents' Day


May 8 is Parents' Day in Korea, the day of filial piety. As you can guess from the name, it's a combination of Mother's Day and Father's Day. Originally declared in 1953 as Mother's Day, it came to encompass fathers to, be re-named Parents' Day in 1973.

Every year the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs rewards exemplary figures of filial devotion. Big temples and other cultural institutes throw big ceremonies to invite the elderly of the town to enjoy the day.
