Korea’s Overseas Construction Enters a Second Boom

When the 160-story skyscraper Burj Tower is completed in 2008 in the heart of the new city rising near Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it will set a new record as the world’s tallest building.

The firm at work erecting the Burj Tower in Dubai, the building that will break the world’s record, is none other than a Korean firm. Samsung Corporation won the bid for Burj Tower project in 2004, a building which will reach 160 stories at over 700 meters in height. The total floor space of the building will reach 495,000 square feet. Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction also won the bid for the largest scale Shoaiba desalination plant at the end of last year for $850 million to be built in Saudi Arabia. These offers have caused a great boom in overseas construction for Korean firms.
