The original Cyworld began its service in 1999. Cyworld is a uniquely Korean online community fostering interpersonal relations. In 2001, in particular, Cyworld provided the mini homepage service that allowed members two-way communication with their Ilchons, a Korean term indicating people of the closest personal ties, which boosted its membership to 20 million. That means one out of every two South Koreans belongs to Cyworld. However, it felt the need to transform itself, as the market reached the saturation point.
