Seodaemun Prison (Hyeongmuso) was built during Japan’s occupation of Korea at the end of the Daehan Empire and served as a major site of Japan’s oppression of Korea’s independence movement against its forced colonization. For almost 80 years, it has stood as a living monument to the ordeal and grief of those tumultuous times in modern Korean history.
