What are some characteristics of Korean music and traditional Korean instruments?

Korean folk music is varied and complex, but it is generally strongly rhythmic, simple and bright. An especially famous and popular branch of folk music is the very percussionistic pungmul, a Korean folk music tradition based on farming culture that also includes dancing and singing. It was originally played as part of farm work, on rural holidays and at other communal events, as well as in shamanistic rituals. Most pungmulperformances take place outdoors with dozens of players, all in constant motion.
