The National Assembly is the legislature of the Republic of Korea. It is a unicameral body of 299 members: Most are directly elected from single-member constituencies, although 54 are selected via proportional representation, where seats are distributed to parties ─ which form party lists prior to the election ─ based on the percentage of total votes they received Lawmakers serve renewable, four-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Most lawmakers are elected in regular general elections in which the entire body is selected, although by-elections are held when the need arises (for example, when a lawmaker cannot finish his or her term). The next general election will take place in 2012.
