Why are Koreans so passionate about education?

Due to Korea's shortage of natural resources, high population density and limited job opportunities, over the past half century Koreans have had no choice but to concentrate on education. Korea underwent a major transformation in the early 1900s, when the Joseon Dynasty ended in Japanese occupation, and another after the devastating 1950-1953 Korean War. The aristocracy that had persisted for several thousand years was displaced and the social hierarchy experienced a wide-scale reshuffle. Since then, education has been perceived as the sole means of achieving social and financial success.
