Another tributary of Hangang, Yangjaecheon begins in Gwanaksan (Mt.) and Cheonggyesan (Mt.) and runs through Gwacheon (in Gyeonggi-do) and Seoul's Gangnam area. This originally meandering stream, which was known as "Gongsucheon” in the past, was straightened up during a development project in the 1970s. The shallows which form at the joint of Yangjaecheon and another tributary, Tancheon, often attract flocks of white cranes. This is the reason the area has its current name of "Hangnyeoul", which means "shallows of cranes".
