Dokdo island is located in the middle of East Sea about 216 km off the eastern border of Korea, and 87.4 km southeast of Ulleungdo island. In 1914, Dokdo officially became an administrative district of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. Dokdo is made up of two small rocky islets, Dongdo (the East islet) and Seodo (the West islet), as well as 36 small islets.
